FAQ about Yunnan Tours from Hong Kong

You can travel from Hong Kong to Yunnan with non-stop flights. There are normally two direct flights every day running between Hong Kong and Kunming, operated separately by China Eastern Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airways. The air journey takes about 2.5 hours.

From time to time, there's also direct flight to Lijiang from Hong Kong. But it depends on the airline schedule.

Regarding the bullet train from Hong Kong to Kunming, you have to get to Guilin first, and change for another train heading for Kunming.

If you're Chinese citizenship, you are required to obtain the Home Return Permit (officially called Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents) to enter Mainland China and travel to Yunnan. Passport is not a must.

If you are a resident living in HK with a foreign passport, you should apply for a Chinese visa to travel to mainland China, including Yunnan. You can use an agency for the China visa service or consult with Chinese Visa Application Service Center. All you need to do is prepare the required documents.

Generally speaking, March to June and September to November is the best time to visit Lijiang, Dali, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Jianshui and most places of Yunnan.

May to October is the best time to visit Shangri-La, Deqin, Lugu Lake, Nujiang, Dulongjiang and Northwest Yunnan.

October to March is the best time to visit Yuanyang Rice Terraces.

You may visit Kunming, Xishuangbanna, Dazhaoshanbao in Zhaotong, Tengchong and some other places anytime of a year you prefer, but it is better to avoid traveling in July to August, during the rainy season or during the hottest summer day.

  1. 1. Most places of Yunnan are 1500m-2000m above sea level. But some destinations like Lijiang and Shangri-La are at 2500m to 3200m, which may cause the altitude sickness. If you are from the lower altitudes and afraid of the potential altitude sickness, you may get to Kunming and Dali first to acclimate gradually, and also prepare some medicine. The elderly travelers and people who have heart disease should consult with your doctor before your trip to Yunnan.
  2. 2. Yunnan is a paradise for foodies, with a wide spectrum of cuisines and traditional foods. Therefore you may have a wonderful food adventure in Yunnan. Nevertheless, if you miss Western foods or canton cuisine, you can find very nice Western restaurants and Canton restaurants in big cities or popular destinations of Yunnan as well.
